About
The (Unofficial) Grassroots Collected Tweets, Opinion, News and Blogs from cross party supporters of the NO vote for the Electoral Reform Referendum in May 2011. Set up following the announcement by Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg of the AV Referendum date, VoteNOToAV has attracted cross party support from Conservatives, Labour, Liberal Democrats, Greens and Nationalists.
We feel that the NO2AV Campaign has a wider and more diverse base then that of the Yes.
Comprising of those who feel that First Past the Post has served us well, supplying a simple, strong, stable majority government in over 74 nations worldwide for hundreds of years. To those who can see the fatal flaws in the Alternative Vote which is only used by Australia, Ireland, Papa New Guinea and Fiji in any National Election (Apart from Fiji which has had any elections since the coup). To those Nationalist parties in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland who oppose the timing of the referendum on the same day as local council elections and elections for the devolved bodies. The No campaign also comprises of those who see the cost as a major flaw, spending £80-£100 million on a referendum at the same time as up to 40% cuts? Is that really what is needed for a system that isn’t that far different from FPTP? On top of all these NO2AV also contains those who will not sell out and accept less then full Proportional Representation or their desired electoral system.
Electoral Reform Society, Power 2010, Take Back Parliament, Unlock Democracy and Make Votes Count Coalition all want Proportional Representation, yet are willing to campaign for AV which could delay PR for decades longer. Many would rightly argue thats too long a wait! These groups argue that getting rid of FPTP will open the way to STV, Party Lists, AMS etc. We say that we’d rather have a multiple choice referendum rather then a costly yes/no referendum.
So we hope you can help, by blogging, door knocking, canvassing and tweeting your way to saying #NO2AV
Remember to use #NO2AV on Twitter!
